Skyport Urges Safe Kite Flying Near Airport

April 15, 2025 | 0 Comments

As Bermuda prepares to celebrate Good Friday, Skyport is “reminding the public to fly kites safely and observe aviation safety restrictions around the airport.”

A spokesperson said, “To protect passengers and ensure safe aircraft operations, kites flown near L.F. Wade International Airport must not exceed a height of 30 metres [approximately 100 feet] above ground. This restriction is particularly important in the Ferry Reach, Kindley Field Road, and Clearwater areas of St. David’s, all of which lie within the airport’s aerodrome traffic zone.”

“Good Friday is one of Bermuda’s most beloved holidays, and we want residents to enjoy it safely,” said Jason Inniss, Director of Airport Operations at Skyport.

“The kite height limits near the airport are in place to prevent kites from interfering with aircraft, especially during take-off and landing. A single high-flying kite can pose a significant risk to flight safety, including the potential to be ingested into an aircraft engine.”

The spokesperson said, “According to the Air Navigation [Overseas Territories] Order 2013 [AN[OT]O], kites must not be flown:

  • Above 30 metres within an aerodrome traffic zone during an airport’s operating hours.
  • Above 60 metres anywhere in Bermuda without prior permission from the Governor.

“Skyport encourages all kite-flyers to respect these guidelines and celebrate Good Friday with care and consideration for public safety.

“For further details on kite-flying restrictions near the airport, please contact Skyport at 441-444-4400.”
