FDM Deputy Leader’s Bermuda Day Message
[Bermuda Day message from FDM Deputy Leader Quinton Sherlock]
Bermuda Heritage Day [24th of May] has long been a sacred time on our national calendar — a day filled with joy, pride, and a deep sense of belonging. For generations, it has been the celebration that brought us together — not just as neighbours, but as one people.
24th of May is solidified as a time when the day’s events meant waking up with excitement, walking the parade route, and stopping at every camp along the way. Families always shared food without hesitation, old friends reunite without effort, and strangers smile at each other with the ease of kin. The Gombeys dance freely through the streets, and the day often ends at Till’s Hill — a spontaneous, electric block party where laughter, music, vibes and love fill the air.
But in recent years, something has shifted. That unity we once felt has been clouded by fear, by division, and by violence. Anti social behaviours and cycles of revenge have stolen too many lives and broken too many hearts. Innocent people — sons, daughters, mothers, fathers — are getting caught in crossfires that none of us can afford to ignore.
We are losing what generations before us built with blood, sweat, and heart. We are forgetting what it means to truly be Bermuda.
The Free Democratic Movement [FDM] is calling on each and every one of us — from the East to the West — to reflect, to remember, and to reclaim who we are. Let this Heritage Day be more than a tradition. Let it be a turning point. A reminder that our culture is too rich, our people too precious, and our Island too small to be divided by hate or silence.
We can get back to what makes Bermuda special — the sense of community, the open arms, the shared meals, the laughter ringing through the streets and the safety in doing so. But it starts with each of us choosing love over revenge, unity over separation, and legacy over loss.
Let us honour our ancestors not just with words, but with action. Let us protect what they fought so hard to establish. Let us be brave enough to rebuild the bonds that once made this Island one of the most beautiful and united places on earth.
This Heritage Day, let’s not just celebrate the past — let’s fight for our future. Let’s be Bermuda again.
