Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation celebrates Bermuda Day by showcasing student-made Gombey capes, masks, and mini floats that honour the island’s rich history.

A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Day is an exciting time to celebrate the amazing island of Bermuda and all of its history.

“The Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation [Kaleidoscope] has been working with children to celebrate this history. This has included but is not limited to Gombey capes, Gombey masks, and mini floats. The Kaleidoscope students have asked us to share their innovative creations with the wider community.

“The Kaleidoscope children have been having an absolute blast designing and building their own Bermuda Day floats for our mini parade, and it’s been a whirlwind of creativity! From giant turtles to shimmering fish, sandy beaches to hidden coves, their imaginations have run wild as they explored forms, structures, and decorations in the most colorful ways. With lots of laughter, they explored soca and calypso music while creating.

“Their youngest group, ART+ Preschool of 2.5-4 year olds have each made their own Gombey inspired capes. They enjoyed playing with the glue, glitter, and making a unique creation all their own. At Art+ they focus on the creative process and exploring the colors, textures, and shapes. Gombey capes let them explore these themes in a new way.

“In all of Kaleidoscope classes, they incorporate history and culture into their art. Understanding the history of Gombeys is an important part of the artwork and was explored in age appropriate ways.

“Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation’s mission is empowering children through art. They believe that celebrating the local art of Bermuda helps connect people to the cultures of Bermuda. They serve children from toddlers aged 18 months to adults through engaging in art, nature, and the creative process. Their space at 27 Jubilee Road has become a cornerstone for thousands seeking creative exploration and learning in a supportive environment.

“Kaleidoscope offers classes, camps, and workshops to the public. Kaleidoscope visits each public preschool on the island and works with many public and private schools for workshops.

“If you know a young, aspiring artist who could benefit from a scholarship, don’t hesitate to recommend them. Kaleidoscope’s Bursary students are ages 18 months-18 years old and can be recommended by a teacher, social worker, community partner, or a caregiver. If you know a student who is interested please reach out to info@kaf.bm to share your interest and learn about our opportunities.”
