Nonprofit Alliance To Lead Accreditation Program
Accreditation and certification based on the BNSC Standards of Excellence will be managed and administered by the Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda.
A spokesperson said, “As we mark the twentieth anniversary of the Bermuda National Standards Committee [BNSC], we are thrilled to announce we announce a significant transition that sets a new course for nonprofit and social services certification and accreditation in Bermuda. Accreditation and certification based on the BNSC Standards of Excellence will be managed and administered by the Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda [NAB] effective May 2025.
“Founded in 2005, BNSC began as a collaborative effort among the government, nonprofits, donors, and community members dedicated to upholding internationally recognized standards every day. From its early days as a loosely organized network, BNSC has evolved into a free-standing nonprofit entity that certifies and accredits over 30 nonprofits and government departments in Bermuda.
“In tandem with BNSC’s evolution, the Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda has been expanding its infrastructure to better support and strengthen Bermuda’s nonprofit sector. This has included efforts across the social sector to bolster service provision to the community.
“This spring, a restructured approach will take effect: the BNSC certification and accreditation process will now be managed and administered by the Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda. This strategic alignment allows for greater synergies and efficiencies in the delivery of this important service.”
Bonnie Claggett, Chair of the BNSC Board of Directors, remarked, “The purpose of the BNSC since its inception has been to advocate for excellence and trust within our community services by promoting best practice standards of service delivery. This new direction will ensure this important work not only continues but is elevated.”
Dr. Nicola Paugh, Executive Director of the Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda, shared her enthusiasm, “We strongly believe in the pivotal role that accreditation plays in establishing and promoting best practices. A robust accreditation system has such exciting potential for enhancing the effectiveness and impact of Bermuda’s nonprofits and social services. We are excited to lead the BNSC into this new chapter.”
The spokesperson said, “Certification and accreditation under the Nonprofit Alliance will be led by Dr. Aria Bean, NAB’s new Director of Operations. With prior public and nonprofit sector experience, including the BNSC accreditation process, Dr Bean is uniquely suited to lead this new area of work for the Nonprofit Alliance. Dr. Bean is the first Bermudian to earn a Doctorate in Social Work, and her exceptional track record in coaching, training, and educational roles will be an asset to the new management of nonprofit and social services accreditation.”
Dr. Bean expressed her enthusiasm about her new role, stating, “I am thrilled to contribute to an organization that plays a pivotal role in enhancing the capabilities and standards of the nonprofit sector in Bermuda. I look forward to driving meaningful change and fostering sustainable progress in leading the BNSC certification and accreditation services for Bermuda. I have witnessed first hand the value these standards play in ensuring high-quality service provision to our community.”
The spokesperson said, “Announcements on the roll out of these services under the Nonprofit Alliance will be made in the next two months. The Nonprofit Alliance’s immediate focus is on developing enhanced technological infrastructure to streamline and improve the certification and accreditation review process. The legacy partnership with the US Council on Accreditation will continue, allowing the Nonprofit Alliance to maintain the international affiliation that has underpinned local accreditation services since their inception.
“The Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda is a registered charity dedicated to strengthening, unifying, and championing the nonprofit sector. Through capacity building, collaboration, and advocacy, the Nonprofit Alliance works to build a stronger and more connected nonprofit sector and ultimately a better Bermuda.
