Bermuda Archers Competing In Copa Merengue
The largest Copa Merengue archery tournament to date has begun in Santo Domingo, drawing over 200 archers from across the Americas, including a contingent from Bermuda. The world ranking event features 216 athletes representing 24 countries, a notable increase of more than 60 participants from the previous year.
This year’s Copa Merengue is being held concurrently with a qualification event for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, which are also scheduled to take place in Santo Domingo.
Bermudian archers competed in both the recurve men’s and women’s divisions on the opening day of competition. Camerin Pickering achieved a 9th-place finish in the men’s recurve, scoring 648 points. Jaydon Roberts ranked 28th with 604 points, while Robert O’Connor placed 59th with 449 points.
In the recurve women’s division, Robin Ann Selley led the Bermudian women, securing 21st place with a score of 578. Elektra Smith finished 39th with 438 points, and N’Dera Smith concluded the Bermudian participation in 44th place with 321 points.
Following the qualification round, elimination matches for the Copa Merengue commenced. In the men’s recurve division, Pickering advanced by defeating Fernandez Cabero of Bolivia 6-0. Roberts also moved to the Second Round after narrowly beating Heriberto Jimenez of the Dominican Republic 6-5. O’Connor was eliminated by Matias Grande of Mexico with a score of 6-0.
In the women’s bracket, Selley won her first round match against teammate N’Dera Smith 6-0. Elektra Smith was defeated by Camila Patricia Perez Vizcaino of the Dominican Republic 6-0.
