Bermuda Is Love ‘BermudaIsHome’ Campaign
Bermuda Is Love is launching the #BermudaIsHome campaign, a month-long initiative in June 2025 focused on “challenging the commodification of housing and advocating for social housing as a human right.”
A spokesperson said, “In Bermuda, housing is treated not as a necessity but as a financial asset. It is a system where profit comes before people. Those unable to meet rising rents or mortgage payments are left behind, excluded by a market driven by speculation and inequality.
“This system is not just broken—it is immoral. The very institutions benefitting from this unjust housing economy are rooted in the legacy of slavery and the systemic exploitation of Black Bermudians. Today’s wealth gap is a direct continuation of that history.
“Throwing more money into this unjust market will not solve the crisis. The root causes—profit driven markets, speculative investment, and deep economic inequality—must be addressed. We need transformation, not tinkering.
Our Vision: Housing as a Right, Not a Commodity
“Bermuda must reimagine housing through the lens of justice, equity, and community. Social housing offers that alternative: a system that prioritizes human dignity over profit. Cities like Vienna, Singapore, and Amsterdam have shown that when housing is built for people—not markets—entire communities thrive.
“This campaign is not just about awareness. It is about building collective power, shifting culture, and demanding justice. We believe that housing is a human right—and that every Bermudian deserves to feel secure, respected, and at home.

“Join us this June to fight for a future where housing is a right, not a privilege—and where Bermuda is truly home for all.”
Lots of the guys who watch over Bermuda from their daily seats around Bermuda will come for their house after they get their free cup of soup from Salvation Army. Many feel it is about time that right was granted free like health care when they go hospital and free like the soup from the salvation army. Makes sense to them as they sit and do nothing all day. You all working can do better for the homeless. But guess what? Why not take away all the freebies and so they will stand on their own 2 feet
So they’re advocating for slums? Places filled with drugs and violence that the tenants couldn’t care less about because hey, it ain’t their home. Because this is how every slum and ghetto starts out.
Can someone please tell this useless, Communist organization to go away please? Focus on teaching people how to better themselves, not to be victims.
The same people who want reparations are homophobic and racist….makes me laugh at the overwhelming hypocrisy.
Keep begging…you’ll go nowhere until you grow up and learn to do for yourself.
Manynof us with 2 jobs saving, sacrificing and getting it done.fireigners getting bit done. Now if you have the right to a home next it will be the right to 2 wives. The right to 6 months off a year. The right to take the day off for my birthday which seems to already have been given. There are hundreds who already have thevright to stay up late, wake up late and sit home playing games all day. Plus many who have the right to being spectators wnd critics while we work our butt’s off. Yep communist liberal nonsense infecting people. Surely the proponents saw their parents work hard for what they got and not sit around hoping Santa Claus will also give them a house free and they can stay in it free. Withdraw all these free programmes and they will suddenly realize they have to work. And they will.
Want and need are two different dreams as people have to face up to reality which are not the same not every body has the income to suport home ownership the recent decline in the economy make the dream virtually imposable not every body achieves educational standars comanding higher saleries . instant gratification has be come the order of the day .
The world is / has changed by that meaning Bermuda is a;sochanging so i ask how many people are willimg to make the scarifce to achieve home ownership many do not want to live with their parents or even want their parents home or leave the island.
Asking people to make a sacrifise has turned in to a civil righr as many live their lived in reverse fun and play first work comes later if they can get it, if the feel like it.
Owning a home is is an expensive proposition, it is no free ride, the day of people helping one another is over as selfish greed has taken first place as social atmosphere is virtually non existant.
Much of what you say, Pac Man, was being said 40 years ago when my wife and I first got a piece of the rock. I do not see matters much differently today. If people buckle down, work hard and live sensibly, they too can get a piece of the rock.
Look what we have here to day the reality of promices made which can not be kept .
The better building lots are all gone, as hundreds of two apartments houses were completed on those lots.
Time has come to stop dreaming.
37 years ago the were many building lots of land available but not today as Bermuda is now over built because that was what the housing corproration was set up by the UBP to encourage owners to rent to suport their mortgage .
Every lot of land had two units one being put up for rent there were some sad stories there as there were damages.
On the up side to day I would not be suppried if many if not all those projects are now paid off .
The fly in the ointment and still exists today was and is”rent control “being not kept up with the times. the tennants could spent their money on other things ,this isand paradies has got it share of problems. Inflation : lack of work: people living off the taxpayer :saving if any gone :single parents with little of no support from no fathers.
Rent control only stifles the development of new residential units by making such development uneconomical.
And many opportunities exist today for a young, ambitious, person to find a derelict home to fix up. There are many in Bermuda. Just recently the PLP Government was suggesting that the Bermuda Housing Corporation could take over derelict properties and fix them up.
If tiny homes were allowed by planning in Bermuda much more housing issues would have be solved. We should have a tiny home community that are affordable and practical. We should have been jumped on this trend since we cannot make more land.
Please make that suggestion to the Minister responsible for planning and offer to donate the land and spearhead the project.
Goal. When they were affordable many said no. No visi9n. Many don’t pay rent so jow it is alright????
We have free bus fare for students and seniors. Free ferry or seniors and reduced cost for license for seniors.
The reluctance for owners / renter to offer their part of the home up for rent is determined by several factors.
Where the shoe fits, some body has to wear it. i may be cheep to rent it but not cheep to own it
Loan / Mmortcage interest and repayment porortional to the value of the unit.
Insurance / comprehensive proportional on the value of the unit.
Standard maintenance ,painting: electrical: plumbing: carpentry : land scaping :and more
Repairs caused by damage can be in the thousands .
Lawyers and court fees rent and damage collection.
Theft of minor and /or major chatels >>>>>> they cut and run
Land tax on the unit.
Unrealistic low Rent Depost against all above except for normal wear and tear
Unpaid lasy months rent >>>>> they cut and run
Unpaid Belco bill. >>>>> they cut and run
Unpaid final rent. >>>>> they cut ans run
Unpaid telephone bill >>>>> the cut and run.
RENT CONTROL not adjusted in years .
If a land lord is able to account for 50 % of a years rent they are very lucky
