Dimitri Gontcharov has claimed the Bermuda Chess Championship title, capping years of dedication and international representation.

A spokesperson said, “Dimitri Gontcharov, who graduated this week from the BHS, has won the 2025 Bermuda Chess Championship. The national tournament concluded on June 17 after seven rounds, with 30 players competing.

“Dimitri, 18, began playing chess at the age of four and has participated in local tournaments organized by the Bermuda Chess Association since the age of ten. Over the years, he has quietly built up a strong foundation in the game through consistent participation and study.

“Earlier in the academic year, he represented Bermuda at the 2024 World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary. There, he scored 5.5 points across nine rounds—the highest score on the Bermuda team—and was awarded the title of Candidate Master [CM] by the International Chess Federation [FIDE], becoming the youngest player in Bermuda to achieve this title.

“In addition to the 2025 national championship, Dimitri has represented Bermuda at several international events, including:

  • World Chess Olympiads [2024, 2022, 2020]
  • Panamerican Youth Chess Festivals [2017, 2018, 2019]
  • CARIFTA Chess Tournaments [2018, 2019]
  • World Amateur Chess Championship [2018]
  • Central American Youth Chess Tournament [2017]

“At BHS, Dimitri led the school’s chess club, where he mentored younger students and helped foster a welcoming space for those interested in learning the game.

His coach, Grandmaster Andrei Maksimenko, who also served as Bermuda’s team captain at the 2024 Olympiad, commented: “Dimitri’s results reflect steady effort over many years. He’s continued to grow as a player and has remained committed to learning. I’m pleased to see his work rewarded with this national title.”

A spokesperson added, “As he transitions to the next chapter after graduation, Dimitri plans to continue developing his chess skills while pursuing further academic and personal goals.”
