Enhancements Around Bermuda Marquee Sign

The City of Hamilton announced the completion of paving and landscaping works surrounding the Bermuda Marquee Sign on Front Street.

A spokesperson said, “The project, carried out by Brown & Company landscapers, began in February 2025 with the goal of enhancing the area around one of Hamilton’s most photographed landmarks. These upgrades were designed to elevate the space to match the vibrancy and artistic impact of the Marquee Sign, which has become a must-see attraction for both locals and visitors since its installation in 2023 as part of the City’s VIVID: Public Art Initiative.

“Key improvements included the installation of Stone-Crete pavers to replace the previous concrete slab, enhancing the visual appeal of the site, and upgraded drainage systems to prevent pooling after heavy rainfall and improve year-round accessibility.

“During construction, the nearby bike parking bays were temporarily inaccessible for public safety. These have now been fully restored and are open for use.

“The planned improvements were part of the original vision for the Marquee Sign but were postponed to accommodate updated legislation requiring a revised stormwater system design. The upgraded infrastructure now meets all current regulatory standards and supports the possibility of future developments, such as a harbourfront boardwalk connection.

“The 2,356 sq. ft. area has been thoughtfully transformed, with lighting previously installed to illuminate the sign now enhancing its visual impact after dark.

“Originally conceptualized in 2019, the BERMUDA Marquee Sign came to life following an island-wide design competition in 2021. The winning submission by Bermudian artist Keeon Minors of Lead x Design was selected from more than 60 entries for its bold and colorful representation of Bermuda’s landscapes, flora, fauna, and architecture.”

“The Marquee Sign has quickly become one of the most photographed spots on the island,” said Jessica Astwood, the City’s Director of Marketing & Communications. “This enhancement project ensures the surrounding area reflects the same level of quality and pride as the sign itself. It’s more than a photo opportunity—it’s a celebration of Bermuda’s culture, creativity, and community.”

A spokesperson added, “The City of Hamilton extends its appreciation to the public for their patience during the construction period and looks forward to welcoming everyone to enjoy this refreshed and revitalized waterfront space.”

New lighting, new flooring, new aesthetics…then slap a massive gated drain in the middle of your photo… only in Bermuda.

One of the most photographed spots but you didn’t install a simple structure to hold people’s phones for a countdown timer so their whole family can be in it. Smh.
