MarketPlace Warns Of Fake Voucher Scam
The MarketPlace is warning the public about a fraudulent Facebook scam falsely using its brand to promote fake “birthday gift voucher” offers.
A spokesperson said, “The MarketPlace is issuing a public warning regarding a fraudulent scam currently circulating on social media—particularly on Facebook—that falsely uses our brand name, logo, and imagery to promote fake “birthday gift voucher” offers.
“These posts are in no way affiliated with The MarketPlace. They appear designed to deceive the public into clicking on illegitimate links that may lead to phishing websites or request personal and financial information. One such example of the scam can be found here.
“We are actively working to report and remove these scam posts and have issued counter alerts through our official social media platforms to protect our customers and the public.
“We strongly urge members of the public to exercise caution and to verify the authenticity of any promotions before clicking on links or sharing personal information. All legitimate MarketPlace promotions are communicated solely through our official channels.
“For clarity, The MarketPlace will never ask members of the public to provide credit card numbers, banking details, or other sensitive information via social media.
“This matter has been reported to the Bermuda Police Service’s Financial Crimes and Fraud Unit.
“Screenshots of our alerts are included below for reference. The two colourful images show warnings we posted on our official social media platforms, while the white image is a text-based alert we added in the comments section of one of the scam posts.”
