Tennis: Bermuda Defeat Aruba In Davis Cup
Bermuda has guaranteed its position in Americas Group III for the upcoming Davis Cup season after their excellent showing which saw the Bermudian team defeat Aruba 2-1 in their second tournament match in Costa Rica.
Following an initial victory over host nation Costa Rica, Bermuda continued competition at the Costa Rica Country Club.
Bermuda established an early lead in the tie. Daniel Phillips secured the first point for Bermuda by defeating Aruba’s Kyle Frankel in the opening singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Aruba subsequently evened the match. Patrick Sydow of Aruba defeated Bermuda’s Trey Mallory in the second singles, 7-6, 6-0, leveling the tie at one point each.
The decisive doubles match featured Phillips and Mallory for Bermuda against the Aruban duo of Frankel and Sydow. The Bermudian pair won the three-set contest, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
