Island Games: Nusum On U23 Goals
[Written by Stephen Wright]
John Barry Nusum, the Bermuda Under-23 coach, has backed his players to “rise to the occasion” as they prepare to head to Orkney, Scotland, for the International Island Games.
Nusum, a former Bermuda national team captain, led the under-23 side to a fourth-place finish at the previous Games in Guernsey in 2023, losing 2-0 to Ynys Mon in the semi-finals.
In the bronze medal match, they lost 2-1 to the Isle of Wight, taking the lead through a first-half penalty from Enrique Russell.
The 20-player squad headed to Orkney today [July 10] from Aberdeen, where they have held a training camp, playing a pair of friendlies against local opposition.
Bermuda face the Western Isles in their opening game on July 13 before playing Ynys Môn two days later.
The semi-finals and positional play-offs will take place on July 17, with the medal matches on July 18 for the men’s and women’s competitions.
“We are looking forward to competing in the Island Games this year,” Nusum said.
“We are traveling with a young team full of potential and are ready to see them rise to the occasion in a men’s tournament.
“Players like Adrian Trott and Caleb McDowall will be leaned on for their experience in their second Island Games, while the youth of players like Khari Sharrieff and Brighton Morrison will look to add a spark.”
