The Bermuda men’s under-23 and women’s national football teams made winning starts to their Island Games campaigns in Orkney today [July 13].

In their opening match against the Western Isles, the under-23 team enjoyed a convincing 2-0 victory thanks to second-half goals from Joshua Joseph and Keyni Mills at the Rendall Community Centre.

Joseph, who scored the opener, said it was crucial his team started the competition with a victory.

“We had to work hard and changed the formation [at half-time],” Joseph told Bernews.

“We have to be fearless and know we can go against anyone and get a result.”

Meanwhile, the women’s team, the defending champions, had to fight back from a goal down to defeat Jersey 3-1 at the Stromness Academy courtesy of second-half goals from Jaden Manders, Khyla Brangman [penalty] and Jya Ratteray-Smith.

Koa Goodchild, the team’s captain, hailed her team-mates togetherness and will to win.

“Our goal is to win the group and advance, so winning the first game was vital,” she said.

“Cecoy [Robinson, an assistant coach] told us at half-time that we we’re not the champions anymore, that was two years ago, and the other team are coming for us.

“We have to come here and fight if we want that championship.”

In athletics, Jake Brislane finished second in his 1,500 metres heat in 3min 58.65sec to advance to the final of his event.

“My big goal is to win a medal,” he said. “There are three guys faster than me on paper, but I’ll try.”

Also competing at the Pickaquoy Centre, Gayle Lindsay achieved a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 metres final, finishing in 38:28.29.

Triathlete Megan Berry finished eighteenth in the women’s event in 2:47:51.

In lawn bowling at Kirkwall Bowling Club, David Leach won his opening two men’s individual matches, beating Ian Barnes, of the Falkland Islands, 2-0 and Stephen Williams, of Guernsey, 2-1.
