Taylor Carrick will compete for the gold medal in the men’s squash final tomorrow [July 15] after a gritty semi-final victory at the Island Games in Orkney.

Carrick overcame Gibraltar’s Ivan Flores 3-2 in a tense five-game battle at the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall, showcasing resilience and determination.

The Bermudian took the opening game 11-9, but Flores responded with an 11-7 win in the second. Carrick regained the lead by dominating the third 11-4, only for the experienced and tactical Flores to even the score again with an 11-5 win in the fourth.

In the deciding fifth game, Flores appeared to have the upper hand before Carrick launched a spirited comeback, winning 11-9 to clinch the match.

He will face Orkney’s Finlay Scott in the final.

“Gold would be fantastic; however, the goal was to finish on the podium,” Carrick told Bernews.

“I’m pretty excited to reach the final, especially to earn my way there [by beating] such a strong opponent.”

The Bermuda women’s national football team won their second successive game after defeating the Isle of Wight 2-0, thanks to goals from Jaden Masters and K’Shaela Burch-Waldron at the Stromness Academy.

Masters, who also scored in Bermuda’s 3-1 win over Jersey yesterday, said she believes there is more to come from the team.

“It’s been a perfect start, but we’re still not where we want to be,” she said.

“We’ve had two slow starts [against Jersey and Isle of Wight], but in the second half we’ve come out and dominated both games.”

Bermuda women face the Shetland Islands today in their third group match.

Sean Trott delivered an impressive performance in the men’s 10,000 metres final, finishing fifth with a time of 32:30.36 – his second-fastest over the distance.

“I was in contention for a medal for most of the race until the last mile when they got away from me,” Trott said.

“I love competing at the Island Games – I’ve had people cheering me on who aren’t even from Bermuda!”

Team-mate Phillip Woollins placed seventeenth in 36:59.30.

The Bermuda squash team – Aaron Simmons, Emma Moran-Lee, Danial Hughes, Jin Sun, Jee Su Chua, Daljeet Singh Gadiwale, Dezirae Darrell and Somers Stevenson – finished fourteenth in the team event after defeating the Western Isles 4-1 before losing 3-2 to Ynys Mon.

In lawn bowls, David Leach is third in the round-robin group after winning three of his four matches, having beaten Ian Barnes, of the Falkland Islands, 2-0, Stephen Williams, of Guernsey, 2-1 and Andy Walterson, of the Shetland Islands, 2-1.

Jarryd Dillas and Damian Palanyandi are tied in tenth after both shooting 71 in the first round of the men’s individual golf tournament.

Meanwhile, Sienna Mosquera is twelfth [82] and Katrin Burnie thirteenth [84] in the women’s individual competition.
