The International Development Academy Bermuda Select team began competing in the Super Cup Northern Ireland at the Coleraine Showgrounds in Country Londonderry today [July 28].

They were defeated 3-0 by English academy side Blackburn Rovers.

Richard Todd, the IDA Bermuda head coach, wrote on social media: “The match up was fairly close in the opening period, but Blackburn would demonstrate good control and movement of the ball in the midfield to carve openings through the IDA defence.

“IDA defended with grit to shut down threats while looking dangerous on the counterattack as Cairo Burges caused trouble with his pace to get behind the Blackburn defensive line on several occasions.

“Blackburn would take the lead on an exquisite finish that curled into the top left corner from a shot from just outside the penalty area.

“The lead would double when a run into the penalty area from the right side was smartly cutback for a finish inside the six-yard box.

“During the second half Blackburn would maintain an edge with ball possession and movement. IDA conceded a third when losing possession during an attack on the left side, that saw Blackburn counter quickly to the opposite side to capitalise on the IDA defender in transition.

“The Blackburn attacker drove into the box to finish smartly beyond the goalkeeper.

“IDA had isolated moments where they troubled Blackburn but were unable to create a clear-cut chances to score.

“Attention now turns to the lessons gained from today’s match, to prepare to play against Shankil – who were defeated 1-0 in the earlier match by Coleraine FC.”
