PrivCom Issues Report On PIPA Progress
PrivCom has released its 2020–2024 report highlighting Bermuda’s progress toward full implementation of the Personal Information Act 2016 [PIPA].
A spokesperson said, “The Office of the Privacy Commissioner [PrivCom] is pleased to announce the public release of its 2020 – 2024 Pre-PIPA Implementation Report, marking a pivotal milestone in Bermuda’s journey towards the implementation of the Personal Information Act 2016 [PIPA] on 1 January 2025.”
This comprehensive report provides a detailed overview of the strategic groundwork laid by PrivCom in the years leading up to the full enactment of PIPA. It captures four years of strategic progress in shaping compliance with the legislation, educating the public, bolstering internal systems, and aligning with international standards. “I am pleased to present this Annual Report which details the work of our office since its inception in January 2020, as well as our future plans,” said Alexander White, Privacy Commissioner for Bermuda.
Key highlights of the report include:
- Bermuda’s role as host of the 2023 Global Privacy Assembly [GPA], an annual global forum that brings together more than 130 data protection and privacy watch dogs seeking to improve leadership in data protection and privacy. [page 16]
- Active participation in the 2024 Global Privacy Enforcement Network [GPEN] Sweep which focused on deceptive design patterns in coordination with the International Consumer Protection Enforcement Network [ICPEN]. [page 11]
- A series of local events under the Road to PIPA banner: PIPA Unveiled, Navigating PIPA Compliance, and PIPA & You, designed to equip individuals and organisations with the knowledge, tools, and resources for the full implementation of the Personal Information Protection Act 2016 [PIPA]. [page 23]
- The release of the Financial Services Guidance Note, offering tailored guidance to one of Bermuda’s leading industries. [page 24]
- The signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding [MoUs] with Guernsey, Philippines, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi; these jurisdictions share common privacy philosophies and legal characteristics with Bermuda. [page 42]
The spokesperson said, “PrivCom invites the public, regulates entities, and international partners to review the report as a demonstration of Bermuda’s readiness to usher in a new era of personal information protection.
