2025 Cup Match Day One Wrap-Up
The opening day of the Annual Cup Match Classic between Somerset and St George’s ended evenly poised at the Wellington Oval today [July 31].
After winning the toss, defending champions Somerset elected to bat and posted a solid total of 291 in 59.1 overs.
Experienced all-rounder Dion Stovell led the scoring with a fluent 65 off 62 balls.
He was well supported by Tre Manders, who struck a composed 59 from 68 deliveries, and captain Terryn Fray, who laid the foundation with 60 at the top of the order.
Fray and Kamau Leverock [46] shared a 70-run opening stand to give Somerset early momentum.
St George’s seam bowler Zeko Burgess stood out with the ball, claiming an impressive five for 61 from 12 overs in a fiery spell that helped check Somerset’s charge.
In response, St George’s stumbled early, slumping to 74 for four. Leverock did the early damage, removing openers Marcus Scotland [0] and Nzari Paynter [1].
But a spirited recovery followed, led by Onias Bascome [43] and Delray Rawlins, who played a counter-attacking knock of 76 not out off just 73 balls.
Their 94-run partnership for the fifth wicket steadied the innings, leaving St George’s on 176 for five after 27 overs at the close of play.
