Gift Of Chess Donates 400 Sets To Bermuda
Bermuda’s schools are receiving 400 free chess sets thanks to a donation from the ‘Gift of Chess’ charity.
A spokesperson said, “The Gift of Chess, a US-based charitable organization dedicated to expanding the universal language of chess, has generously donated 400 free chess sets to Bermuda. Founded on the belief that chess is a powerful equalizer—breaking down barriers across age, race, gender, and socioeconomic status—the organization’s mission is to provide access to chess sets, educational technology, and inclusive chess communities worldwide.
“The Bermuda Chess Association [BCA] has been actively collaborating with the Bermuda Department of Education through 2025 to integrate chess into the island’s education system. Following a successful ‘Chess in Education’ seminar held in early 2025, which brought 24 local educators from 14 local schools, it is estimated that nearly 2,000 children have been introduced to chess in Bermuda since the beginning of this year.
“A crucial element of this initiative has been securing access to chess sets and boards for students. To support this effort, the BCA applied on behalf of the Department of Education to The Gift of Chess organization.
“In a wonderful surprise, Bermuda was offered 400 free chess sets, shipped from Panama in June and received earlier this month. These sets will be distributed across Bermuda’s primary and secondary schools to aid teachers in integrating chess into classroom activities. The sets will serve as a tool for both educational purposes and the establishment of school chess clubs, fostering critical thinking and strategic skills among students.
“The Bermuda Chess Association remains committed to working alongside the Department of Education to create pathways for students to develop essential 21st-century skills—such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning—that will prepare them for careers in fields like international insurance and reinsurance. This initiative exemplifies Bermuda’s dedication to nurturing a versatile, skilled, and connected future workforce through the universal language of chess.”
