Southlands Park in Warwick was the scene of a festive celebration this weekend, as the Jab J’Ouvert event was held, with paint, music, and dancing filling the air throughout the celebration.

Wow after all of the protests against development of the south lands area the government has decided to permit this kind of event at the south lands area. Just look at how much trash and paint that is left behind!!! It’s common knowledge that every single time an event of this nature happens there is clear and obvious evidence left behind. It’s a terrible shame, this is not the Bermudian way. These types of events do not embody our values or traditions. They destroy our culture, our beautiful environment and dare I say it invokes community unrest and provokes antisocial behaviors. Sex, drugs, alcohol, violence and debauchery are being injected into a generation that already has little value for the Bermudian way. So many of our young people are glamorizing this fantasy world that they create at these events that they actually believe that they can live wildly and act out in any way they wish without any real world consequences. Let’s do the math; if it’s ok to drink the alcohol, take the drugs, engage in sexual activities and act the complete fool in public while others cheer you on for doing so then why would they fear committing crimes and acts of violence in public and moreover broad daylight??? If Bermudians don’t wake up and stand up for ourselves then our identity will be lost and we will suffer the impact of a lost identity. We will be subjected to whatever label people place on us instead of who we truly are!!!
Just so you know this not the first time these young people have had events of this magnitude in Southlands. Do you really think they would repeatedly get permission to use southlands if they didn’t return the place in an acceptable state. Let the kids have fun, I rather see them doing this killing each other.
Let the kids have fun? They are not kids. The govt gave in to ensure their vote. The contradiction re preserving it is so clear. Face the facts.
Two Bermudas ? ? Yet another example to add to the list.
Wow, don’t worry when the OBA wins the next election you can put a stop to young people having fun.
They are doing exactly what the global elite want them to do. Just another form of distraction and control. Wake up people!!!
I agree 1,000 percent. But they will say who cares, get a life, move on. But you are absolutely right.
This looks incredibly evil, and speaks to the spiritual state of the island. One guy is literally making a tr1gger sign at the camera. Demonic.

Knowing what the colonizers did to my ancestors now that’s demonic.
Try reading up on what this is portrayed as. Sit in it and stew. Then come back and have a conversation.
Two things can be true at once. I you feel covering your body in black tar, donning horns, and gyrating in the dark speaks to your soul’s energy – do you.
Very pleased to say the area was thoroughly cleaned by Monday September 1st.
Great that it was thoroughly cleaned but who actually cleaned it please ?
Cleaned up by who? At the expense of the public by any chance?
As a comparison last weekend I attended a 3 day music festival in Ohio. The ages of performers and attendees was quite wide, though the majority was well over 40 years old and there had to be almost 500 there.
The day after the festival not a scrap of paper, not a single paper or plastic cup, not a bit of trash from any of the vendors was to be seen in the viewing area.
A far cry from how Southlands was left and had to be cleaned up.The difference is culture and respect for the property being used.
Glad you spoke to the issue and did not let them off the hook. Blue paint still remains on the BPSA wall from their ladt event which took days to clean. Have fun yes but be mindful of your responsibility re clean up. But then again if they don’t get their way they will suck their teeth and call us boring and go to England. Makes you think…leave them alone and let then suffer the consequences.
Soooo…
The organizers who put on these events set up and clean up every year once the last person exits the premises. This is not their first event and they are pros at it.
Stop complaining on everything
Live this life because you’re living.

“The organizers who put on these events set up and clean up”
Ok. That is different from the concerts put on at the Arboretum (where W&E cleans up). I am glad to hear it.
Last comment was for the person who asked who cleaned up…
How do you turn a simple and justifiable question into a complaint
One thing: Bermudians love to drink and complain (exhibit A above). So the youth had a few hours of fun. Big deal! BTW- The space was thoroughly cleaned by the organizers as they do every year.
Let’s take a moment to clarify some misunderstandings regarding the Jab tradition. For those who may not have had the chance to delve into its history, let me provide a brief overview.
Jab is a powerful and traditional portrayal that harks back to the times of enslaved Africans, who were often labelled as “devils” by their colonial oppressors. During these celebrations, participants would smear themselves with black substances like molasses, tar, or engine oil and adorn themselves with horns. This was not merely a festive costume; it was a satirical and confrontational act that turned the imposed identity back on itself. By embracing and transforming these negative stereotypes, they showcased their strength, resilience, and defiance.
Playing Jab is, therefore, a profound expression of reclaiming power and a reminder of our ancestors’ emancipation from the brutal conditions of slavery. It is important to note that there are absolutely NO satanic or demonic connotations associated with Jab.
Additionally, I want to emphasize that the attendees of this event span all age groups, as I know a few individuals 55+ who look forward to this event every year. If pointing at the cameraman is now considered a trigger sign, we might be taking our interpretations to an exaggerated level.
Having visited the location on Sunday, I can confirm that the organisers did an excellent job of cleaning up immediately after the event concluded. All trash was collected and placed in the designated collection area, which is the same location used by other organisations that hold events at Southlands.
In conclusion, I urge everyone to think, thoroughly research and learn before forming opinions or casting judgments
They had engine oil back in the days of slavery ? How much else of your post is made up then ?
The fact of the matter is that these people are trashing the place while they’re ‘having fun’ , it looks like a dump and they’re walking all over it like they don’t even notice it and the shame that it should bring .
Someone else above used the word ‘CULTURE’ .
FYI…if you’re uncertain about any details, a quick Google search can help clarify things. During the Jab celebrations, engine oil is used, which is a modern practice and not something that occurred during slavery. It’s important to note that during slavery, there was no reason for celebration. No reason to start making up things here; history speaks for itself.
Did you have a chance to visit Southlands in person, or are you relying on pictures for your information? As some individuals have already mentioned, the area was thoroughly cleaned up after the event.
ObaUbp supporters go back to sleep. This is one of the many reason why no one votes for you geezers. The park was cleaned up.
Someone needs to build a restaurant up in that spot
