Stop-and-search operations on Tuesday [Sept 23] led to the arrest of a 21-year-old for possession of a machete and suspected cannabis, the detention of an underage rider on an unlicensed motorcycle, and the arrest of an impaired motorcyclist following a collision.

Machete And Drug Possession

A police spokesperson said, “Around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, police officers were conducting stop and search operations on Middle Road, Southampton, when they had cause to stop a motorcar driven by a 21-year-old-male.

“Officers informed the driver of the reason for the stop before conducting a search of the vehicle.

“During the search, officers recovered a machete under the front passenger seat.

“The subject was arrested for possession of a bladed article in a public place.

“Officers then conducted a physical search of the subject and recovered a quantity of suspected cannabis along with drug paraphernalia.

“He was further arrested for offences committed under the misuse of drugs act.

Underage Rider On Unlicensed Bike

“At 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, officers were conducting traffic stops at Harbour Road Paget when they stopped a motorcycle being ridden by a male.

“Checks on his identification showed he was not old enough to hold a motorcycle rider license.

“Further inquiries revealed that the bike license had been cancelled and its registration had expired.

“Officers arrested and cautioned the male for the offence of Driving Whilst Disqualified by reason of age. He was conveyed to the Hamilton Police Station where he was processed and detained. He was subsequently issued moving violation tickets, [MVT’s] for the offences.

Impaired Motorcycle Rider

“Around 11:16 p.m. on the same date, Police attended a single Road Traffic Collision along South Road near the junction with Paynter’s Road, St. George’s.

“Upon arrival, officers observed a male lying next to a motor cycle on the nearby golf course.

“He was attended to for his injuries, at the scene and was subsequently transported by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital [KEMH] for further treatment of those injuries which were not considered to be serious.

“Officers attended KEMH to follow up with the rider’s injuries. While speaking with him, they observed a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and that his eyes were glazed.

“He was then arrested for riding whilst impaired.

“All suspects have been granted bail and will appear before the courts in due course.

“Despite numerous advisories pertaining to stop and search operations, individuals continue to risk arrest by carrying knives without lawful excuse while out in public. Not to mention, operating unregistered vehicles and not having proper documents for operating a motor-vehicle on Bermuda’s roads.

“As previously indicated, the stop and search operations are ongoing and we urge you to think carefully about the possible consequences of your actions and not engage in behaviour that could result in your arrest and prosecution.”

Grant them bail? Why? Process them now through the courts now, not later. It’s bit like a slap on the wrists.
