Veronica Swan DeGraff Earns BF&M Scholarship

BF&M has awarded the $20,000 Postgraduate John Wight Scholarship to Veronica Swan DeGraff, supporting her pursuit of a Doctor of Medicine degree at St. George’s University in Grenada.

A spokesperson said, “BF&M is proud to announce that Veronica Swan DeGraff is the recipient of the BF&M Postgraduate John Wight Scholarship.

“The $20,000 award will support Veronica’s pursuit of a Doctor of Medicine degree at St. George’s University in Grenada, where she is currently leading a cultural competency diabetes research project to create educational resources tailored for Grenadian, Trinidadian, and Bermudian communities.

“Selected from a competitive pool of applicants, Veronica was recognised for her exceptional academic record, leadership in community health initiatives, and dedication to improving public health in Bermuda. She is the founder of Bermuda Youth Connect, has served as a Bermuda Hospitals Board Medical Student Intern, and played a leadership role with Bermuda’s first mobile men’s health clinic, the DailyMale, which provides free screenings for underinsured men.”

Alexis Stovell, Client Experience Manager and member of the Scholarship Committee, said: “We were deeply impressed by Ms. Swan DeGraff’s commitment to her community and her vision for improving healthcare access in Bermuda. We proudly support her educational
journey and her goal of becoming an emergency medicine physician, and we are confident she will have a lasting impact on healthcare in Bermuda.”

Abigail Clifford, Group President and Chief Executive Officer, added: “Veronica has already made a remarkable contribution to healthcare in Bermuda through her leadership, advocacy, and hands-on service. Her dedication to improving the lives of others is inspiring, and it’s exciting to think how much more she will accomplish as she advances in her career. We’re proud to support her on this journey and to invest in a future that will benefit so many in our community.”

A spokesperson added, “A former candy striper and Bermuda Hospitals Board volunteer, Veronica has devoted much of her life to healthcare service. She has worked as a lab technician at the Bermuda Molecular Diagnostic Lab, had articles on public health issues published in the Royal Gazette, and continues to volunteer in community health outreach.

“The scholarship was named in honour of former BF&M Chairman and CEO John Wight and reflects the company’s commitment to fostering local talent.”
