Nonprofit Alliance Launches Donor Toolkit
The Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda [NAB] has launched a comprehensive donor toolkit to help funders, corporate giving committees, and philanthropic individuals incorporate national certification and accreditation into their funding decisions.
A spokesperson said, “The Accreditation and Certification Donor Toolkit—already shared with NAB’s donors— offers clear and practical guidance on how these designations can be used to strengthen funding strategies, boost confidence in grantee capacity and encourage continuous improvement in the nonprofit sector.”
“Certification and accreditation are internationally recognised markers of excellence,” said Dr. Nicola Paugh, Executive Director of NAB. “When donors acknowledge these achievements, they not only reward quality and accountability—they create a tangible financial incentive for other organisations to raise their standards. This is how we move the sector forward, together.”
Why It Matters to Donors
A spokesperson added, “Certification and accreditation, awarded under NAB’s Bermuda National Standards Committee [BNSC] framework, confirm that a nonprofit has undergone rigorous independent review against internationally validated standards.
- “Certification verifies strong governance, financial controls and organisational systems.
- “Accreditation adds an in-depth evaluation of service delivery, particularly for human service organisations supporting vulnerable populations.
“These designations are not rigid requirements, but powerful tools for making informed funding decisions. Donors can use them to:
- “Strengthen due diligence for larger grants [e.g., $25,000+].
- “Identify reliable partners for multi-year commitments.
- “Increase confidence in operational sustainability and impact potential.
Proven Local and International Practice
“In Bermuda, major funders such as the Bermuda Foundation and Centennial Bermuda Foundation already factor BNSC designations into their grant-making. Internationally, philanthropic foundations have long integrated third-party standards into their funding frameworks to reduce risk and encourage excellence.”
Vivien Carter, Director of Philanthropy at the Centennial Bermuda Foundation, notes: “Of the BNSC-certified organisations we fund, over half have received multi-year grants—proof of our confidence in their sustainability and programme quality.”
A Call to the Donor Community
A spokesperson added, “NAB encourages the donor community, in particular corporate giving committees and foundations, to recognise certification and accreditation as key signals of quality. By prioritising organisations with these designations, the donor community can directly incentivise best practice, strengthen Bermuda’s social and human services, and ensure funds are invested where they will have the most sustainable impact.
