Jason Williams Completes Spartathlon Race
Bermudian firefighter Jason Williams completed one of the world’s most demanding endurance events last weekend – the Spartathlon ultramarathon in Greece.
Williams, a former Bermuda goalkeeper, tackled the gruelling 153-mile [246 kilometres] course, running from Athens to Sparta.
He clocked a final time of 35hr 16min and 05sec.
The Spartathlon, held annually since 1983, is often described as the world’s toughest foot race, following the legendary route of the ancient messenger Pheidippides.
Spartathletes must run from Athens along the coast of the Megara Gulf, across the Isthmus of Corinth and over Mount Parthenion before descending into Sparta, passing through 75 check points.
