Chess Equipment Donated To Public Schools
The Bermuda Chess Association is donating chess equipment to Bermuda’s schools, including one large outdoor chess set, twenty large demonstration boards and sixty chess clocks.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Chess Association [BCA], with the generous support of a EUR5,000 grant from FIDE’s Planning & Development Committee [PDC], continues to make significant strides promoting chess as an educational tool across Bermuda’s schools. This initiative highlights Bermuda’s emerging reputation as a world-leader in Chess in Education and reflects the ongoing collaboration between the BCA and Bermuda’s Department of Education.
“As part of this effort, the BCA is donating a comprehensive set of chess equipment to Bermuda’s schools. The donation includes one large outdoor chess set, which will be rotated among public schools to encourage outdoor learning and community engagement.
“Additionally, twenty large demonstration boards will be used to facilitate classroom instruction and interactive lessons, while sixty chess clocks are provided to help students develop essential skills such as time management, working under pressure, and enjoying competitive play in a fun environment. This equipment aims to further embed chess into the school curriculum, fostering critical 21st-century skills like strategic thinking, problem-solving, and concentration.
“This donation is a key element of Bermuda’s long-term “Chess in Education” initiative, launched in early 2025. The program was initiated with a dedicated chess seminar hosted in Bermuda by FIDE’s Chess in Education Commission and has continued to grow throughout the year.
“Bermuda has made remarkable progress, now recognized by FIDE as having three official Chess Schools. The island boasts twenty-two FIDE-certified School Chess Instructors, five Lead School Instructors, and two soon-to-be-appointed Senior Lead Instructors—each playing a vital role in delivering chess instruction and nurturing young talent.
“Complementing the equipment donation, Bermuda has received over 400 chess sets from the Gift of Chess charity, further enriching the local chess ecosystem. Educators and schools continue to implement chess as both an educational and therapeutic tool, contributing to the holistic development of students. Bermuda’s innovative approach and ongoing dedication have positioned it as a global advocate for Chess in Education, earning recognition as a model for integrating chess into school curricula.
“Looking ahead, a winter chess camp will be hosted at Harrington Sound School from December 18th to 31st. Led by the BCA’s Chess in Education Officer, Wolde Place, the camp aims to sharpen students’ skills and inspire a new generation of chess enthusiasts.
