“JP joins us at a fundamental time,” said Martha Kirkland, Chair of the Board of Directors. “We are ready to move forward with renewed energy, a clear strategy, and strong leadership. JP brings a powerful combination of financial acumen, entrepreneurial experience, and a personal connection to our mission. The Board is confident that under his leadership, BSF can solidify our role as a leader in youth development and maritime education in Bermuda.”

The spokesperson said, “As Executive Director, Mr. Doughty will lead Bermuda Sloop Foundation through a new phase of strategic and operational renewal, focusing on financial sustainability, programme development, and community investment.

“A lifelong sailor, Mr. Doughty represented Bermuda at the 1998 Optimist World Championships and is a graduate of Class Afloat, where he served as a watch leader aboard the tall ship S.V. Concordia. His family’s connection to Spirit of Bermuda runs deep — his brother, James Doughty, served as First Officer, and his father, Paul Doughty, took part in the vessel’s maiden voyage and sea trials.

“With a background combining c-suite acumen and broad entrepreneurial experience, Mr. Doughty brings experience in strategic finance, capital raising, operational planning, and managing stakeholder relationships.”

“I feel honored to be steering Bermuda Sloop Foundation into its next chapter, one that is to be defined by a focus on organisational stability and a strategic relaunch. I have experienced first-hand the profound impact that transformational learning onboard a sail training vessel can have for young people—teaching teamwork, leadership, and resilience. I am grateful that Spirit of Bermuda has a chance to fulfill its mission once again of changing lives,” said Mr. Doughty. “I look forward to joining the team and working with all of our stakeholders to ensure a more sustainable future for the Foundation.”

The spokesperson said, “Bermuda Sloop Foundation plans to resume its experiential learning voyages next year, supported by a broader strategy that includes strengthening operations, multi-year career development pathways, strategic partnerships, and strong mentorship programmes.

“Donations to the Foundation can be made at Donate – Bermuda Sloop Foundation.”
