Police Encourage Safety During Holiday

Christmas is almost here. The Bermuda Police Service sends you and your loved ones our warmest wishes. We want you to enjoy these celebrations safely. Please think about others as you celebrate.

Don’t drive if you’ve been drinking. We won’t tolerate impaired driving on our roads. Alcohol and drugs on the road break families and change lives forever. Our roadside sobriety checkpoints are active in all Parishes. These started on Monday, December 22, and will run through to Monday, January 5. We want to stop impaired drivers and keep the roads safe for everyone.

If you plan to drink, plan your ride home. Find a designated driver or take a taxi. It isn’t worth the risk.

Please slow down. Speeding is a major cause of serious crashes and deaths. No party is worth a life. Give yourself extra time. Be patient. Stay alert for people walking and other cars, especially in busy areas.

Holidays bring joy, but they also bring pressure. Spending more time at home can sometimes spark friction between loved ones. We sometimes see domestic abuse rise during this season.

I am asking you to keep a cool head.

If things start to heat up, please, just walk away. Take a breath and clear your mind. Violence is never the answer, and my officers will make arrests when it occurs. Your family deserves a peaceful Christmas. Don’t let a moment of anger land you in a police cell.

You will see our officers across the island. We are out there to keep you safe. Please wish them a Merry Christmas, they are away from their families. We will enforce traffic laws and stop dangerous driving. We will also deal with any trouble quickly.

These steps protect our community. We know you might have concerns about safety right now. The BPS is ready to help you whenever you need us.

Thank you for helping us. Please celebrate responsibly and look out for each other. On behalf of the Bermuda Police Service and my family, I wish you a safe and peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.

Another rollover crash in St Georges last night. The weekend is off to a great start.

If you are drunk, driving and crash your car, be sure to be out of it and far away from it when the police arrive. You can then say “It wasn’t me” and get away with the DUI.
