Bermuda Diabetes Association Raises Awareness

The Bermuda Diabetes Association turned heads at the CHUBB Bermuda Triangle Challenge Allshores 5K walk with signs designed to raise awareness about diabetes.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Diabetes Association made a striking impact at the CHUBB Bermuda Triangle Challenge Allshores 5K walk, staging a bold and interactive stunt to spark conversations and raise awareness of diabetes among participants and spectators alike.

“Team members and volunteers of the Bermuda Diabetes Association carried eye-catching signs displaying impactful messages such as ‘1 in 8 of us has pre-diabetes’, ‘start small, stay consistent’, and ‘someone you love has pre-diabetes and doesn’t know it.’

“With the support of the CHUBB Bermuda Triangle Challenge team, the Association was able to amplify its diabetes awareness message at one of Bermuda’s most visible sporting events.

“Alongside educational and motivational messaging, the Association included clear calls to action inviting spectators to sign up for its diabetes Peer Support group sessions and free pre-diabetes screenings taking place throughout January and early February.”

Francesca Wyatt, Marketing and Community Relations Coordinator at the Bermuda Diabetes Association, said: “Pre-diabetes can be easy to overlook because it often comes without symptoms until it’s too late, but the numbers are impossible to ignore. One in eight people in Bermuda has pre-diabetes, which means most of us are either personally affected or know someone who is.

“By bringing this message into the heart of the Triangle Challenge, we made awareness unavoidable. The signage stopped people in their tracks, the QR codes turned attention into action, and the response to our free pre-diabetes screenings showed just how ready the community is to take control of their health.”

The spokesperson said, “Pre-diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be categorized as type 2 diabetes. Early detection is key because lifestyle changes can prevent or delay the onset of the condition, giving people a chance to take control of their health before it leads to more series complications such as vision loss, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease and more.”

Reid Robinson, co-race director at the CHUBB Bermuda Triangle Challenge, also commented: “We are proud to support the Bermuda Diabetes Association and their innovative approach to raising awareness of diabetes. The Triangle Challenge is about more than racing, it is about bringing the community together and promoting healthier lifestyles, and this activation aligned perfectly with our mission.”

The spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Diabetes Association offers a range of services to support people living with or at risk of diabetes, including diabetes education, nutrition counselling, structured medication reviews, support groups, and health screenings. These resources help individuals understand their risk, make informed lifestyle changes, and take proactive steps to prevent or manage type 2 diabetes, empowering the community to live healthier, happier lives.
