In advance of the Butterfield Mile Races this Friday [Jan 16], we took a look back at the current record holders across the various divisions.

At the elite level, the women’s mile record has stood since 2011, when Jamaica’s Kenia Sinclair clocked an impressive 4 minutes 33.61 seconds. The men’s elite mark is even older, dating back to 2002, when Kenya’s Leonard Mucheru set a time of 4:02.60, a performance that remains the standard more than 20 years later.

Local adult runners have also left a strong legacy. In the women’s 18–39 division, Ashley Couper Estwanik set the benchmark in 2003 with a time of 4:57.46, while Victoria Fiddick holds the 40-and-over record after running 5:30.10 in 2009. On the men’s side, Lamont Marshall established the 18–39 local record in 2006 with a swift 4:23.07, and Gary Raynor posted a 4:32.70 effort in 2010 to secure the 40-plus mark.

The records also reflect the strength of Bermuda’s school athletes over the years. Among senior school competitors aged 17 and under, Izzy Dutranoit set the girls’ record in 2019 with a time of 5:14.30, while Tyler Butterfield, who would go on to make multiple Olympic appearances, continues to hold the boys’ record after running 4:27.30 back in 1999.

At the middle school level, Ashley Irby ran 5:23.63 in 2015 to set the girls’ record for athletes aged 13 and under, while Dage Minors, who later won the elite mile race, claimed the boys’ mark in 2009 with a time of 5:01.90.

Primary school records round out the list, with Ziza Russell setting the girls’ 10-and-under standard in 2019 at 5:39.77. The boys’ primary school record remains one of the oldest on the books, established in 1993 when Spencer Butterfield, whose brother Tyler holds the senior boys record, ran 5:14.70.

The Butterfield Front Street Mile will be the first event in the Bermuda Triangle Challenge which will take place over 3 days this coming weekend.
