More than $20,000 has been raised at a charity golf tournament at Mid Ocean Club to help support care for the elderly at the Westmeath residential and nursing care home.

For some participating in the annual Christmas event, it proved a poignant day as family members had previously been cared for at the home.

Caitlin Curtis, Mid Ocean Club Ladies’ Captain, said: “Westmeath is a charity that is near and dear to many of us. It was proposed by one of our members, Debbie Thorsteinson, whose mother was a resident at Westmeath in her later years.”

“It also happens to be where my father spent the last six months of his life. He passed away in early October last year. The quality of care at Westmeath gave us great peace of mind during a very difficult time.”

More than 50 golfers took part in the event, raising money from raffles, long drive contests, donations and a live auction.

Caitlin Curtis added: “Westmeath is a worthy charity and we take great pride knowing that this money will go towards much needed and important high-quality care of seniors on our island.”

Sue Sharpe, Chair of the Quality Care and Safeguarding Committee at Westmeath Residential & Nursing Care Home said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Mid Ocean Club ladies and all who supported this tournament.

“Community generosity like this makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents and helps us continue providing compassionate, high-quality care to Bermuda’s seniors.”
