Philharmonic Composition & Concerto Winners
The Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra hosted the third annual Young Artist Composition and Concerto Competition on Sunday, January 26 at the Bermuda School of Music.
A spokesperson said, “The event brought together Bermuda’s most promising young musicians to showcase their talent, creativity, and dedication to the art of classical music.
“The competition featured a distinguished panel of judges, including pianist and flautist Ed Rance, violist Johanna Pino-Gonzales, and the Philharmonic’s Board President and Music Director, cellist Kate Kayaian. Together, they evaluated an impressive lineup of performances and original compositions from the island’s emerging artists.
Ms. Kayaian said, “It takes extraordinary focus, resilience, and musical commitment for students to reach this level of performance and creative achievement. We were delighted to celebrate these talented local students, and to shine a spotlight on the dedication and artistry behind their work.”
A spokesperson added, “Composition category winners:
- “1st Prize: Lilia Matcham [16, Wellington School, Somerset, UK] for her piano and violin duet, “The Glimpse.” Her piece will be performed by members of the Bermuda Philharmonic at their Spring Chamber Music Concert.
- “2nd Prize: Prince Domingo [15, Berkeley Institute] for his string trio piece “Delusioned Waltz”
- “3rd Prize: Amelia Currie [17, Warwick Academy] for her contemporary piano and violin duet “Entanglement”.
“Concerto category winners:
- “1st Prize was jointly awarded to:
- “Jithom Liew [13, violinist, Somersfield Academy] for his performance of the Bach Violin Concerto in E major.
- “Gabrielle Henderson [17, horn player] for her performance of the Mozart Horn Concerto no. 3
- “The two first place winners will play their respective pieces with the Bermuda Philharmonic at their Spring Concert on April 19th City Hall in Hamilton.
- “3rd Prize: Dylan Jeffrey [17, violinist, Saltus Grammar School], for his performance of the Haydn Violin Concerto in G major.
A spokesperson added, “The Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra extends its gratitude to the Bermuda School of Music for hosting the event and to all the participants, their families, and teachers for their dedication to the arts.
“The Bermuda Philharmonic invites you to join us for The Art of Music, the latest installment of our fundraising event series pairing chamber music and visual art. The event will take place on Thursday, March 19 at Masterworks Museum from 5:30pm to 8pm.
