The cargo vessel Bermuda Islander successfully rescued a solo sailor from the sailing yacht Alcyon Blue approximately 115 nautical miles southeast of Bermuda following a distress call on Monday.

A spokesperson said, “On Monday, Bermuda Radio received a distress call from the sailing yacht “Alcyon Blue”, located approximately 115 nautical miles southeast of Bermuda. The cargo vessel Bermuda Islander, scheduled to depart Bermuda for Salem after the passing of an extreme winter gale, was asked to proceed directly to Alcyon Blue’s location to assist with the evacuation of a solo sailor.

“The Islander arrived alongside the 52’ sailboat in the early hours of this morning and stayed within proximity to attempt a daylight transfer.

“At approximately 10:00am [Bda time], the 53 year-old sailor abandoned his sailboat and successfully boarded the Bermuda Islander. The Safety of Life at Sea Convention requires Captains to proceed at maximum speed and assist persons in distress, regardless of nationality or status. This obligation stems from long-standing maritime tradition as well as a legal responsibility.”

George Butterfield VP of Meyer Freight Ltd confirms, “The Bermuda Islander has resumed her voyage to Salem, NJ and will return to her normal schedule with BISL V.1910 departing Salem on Monday, February 16th.”
