Boxers Win Five Medals At Brampton Cup
Bermuda’s emerging amateur boxers made a strong impression at the Brampton Cup in Canada after returning home with five medals.
Mustafa Abdul-Jabbar and Hurven-Jay Burgess won gold, while Zane Furbert-Tankard secured silver.
Tristan Burgess and Murywah Swan each collected bronze, with Musa Abdul-Jabba, Anahj Smith and Shiloh Cruickshank also competing.
The fighters, aged 13 to 17, were drawn from Controversy Gym, Aries Sports Centre and Fresh & Hungry Boxing Club, and travelled with coaches Adrian Roach, Garon Wilkinson and Krista Dyer.
Roach, a professional boxer, said the results reflected the competitiveness of the squad, including those who finished outside the medals.
“Even the three guys who didn’t medal fought in super-competitive bouts that could have gone either way,” Roach told Bernews.
He said the event posed a significant challenge for young fighters, particularly those competing internationally for the first time.
“For a lot of these guys, it was their first time fighting, as well fighting overseas,” he said.
“Tournament style fighting is hard on the body, and you have to adjust each day.”
Roach, who previously competed at the Brampton Cup while representing Crandall University in Moncton, New Brunswick, said Bermuda had a strong base of emerging talent.
“We have to some talented young fighters on the island, and if their supported and cultivated, these kids can become something big,” he added.

Congratulations!
