Schools Chase Prizes At Skyport Magic Mile
Schools will compete for prizes at the Skyport Magic Mile, powered by the Pacers Track Club, at the Flora Duffy Stadium on Saturday [February 21].
The event, which runs from noon until 4.30pm, will award cash donations to the schools with the highest participation numbers.
Private and public schools across pre-school, primary, middle and senior school levels are eligible to win $200, courtesy of Skyport, which became the event’s lead sponsor in 2019.
In addition to school prizes, trophies will be presented to the fastest runners in each age-group heat, as well as to the top three overall finishers in every category.
Skyport will also award a $2,000 scholarship to a promising college-bound athlete from the Bermuda Pacers Track Club.
Cal Simons, head coach of Pacers and a co-founder of the annual junior race in 1995, emphasised the event’s long-standing connection with the island’s schools.
“We’re hoping to attract 700 or 750 runners – we still have a week to go,” Simons told Bernews.
“For many of the youngsters, it will be their first time running on the track, giving them a chance to experience the atmosphere.
“It’s a real community event, with the Kids’ Village adding to the excitement. We’re incredibly grateful to our sponsors, Bermuda Timing for handling the timing, and all the officials who come out to support us.
“The funds raised go directly towards helping Pacers send athletes overseas to compete.”
Families can look forward to the return of the Security Associates Kids’ Village, featuring an expanded range of activities for young participants.
The programme will also include a high-energy warm-up session led by Mr Fotogenik, along with live performances to set the tone for the afternoon.
Race distances will vary by age group: four- and five-year-old boys and girls will complete one lap of the track; six- and seven-year-olds will run two laps; eight- and nine-year-olds will cover three laps; and all other age groups will run four laps.
Registration closes at 11.59pm on February 20.
