Jessica Lewis Eyeing Commonwealth Games
Para-athlete Jessica Lewis has set her sights on qualifying for her first Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, this summer.
Lewis, who is competing at the Dubai Grand Prix at the Dubai Club for People of Determination today [February 10] and tomorrow, is currently occupying one of the seven qualifying spots for Glasgow, sitting fifth in the T53/54 400 metres rankings.
Running from July 23 to August 2, the Games will bring together 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories to compete across ten sports and six Para sports.
“I’m sitting in fifth in the qualification rankings, and they take seven automatically and maybe an eighth athlete,” Lewis told Bernews.
“I’m excited about the prospect of competing at the Commonwealth Games.
“It will be great to be on a team with some of the abled-bodied Bermuda athletes.”
The four-time Paralympian said she was excited to test herself in her season opener in Dubai, where she will compete in the 100 and 400.
“I’ve made some equipment changes,” she added. “I’ve started using a different type of glove – a grooved glove.
“I’ve already noticed it’s started helping me put some more power into the rim and improve my technique a bit better.
“I’ll also be getting a new bucket for my chair, which will be 3D printed. I hope to have that before I compete in Switzerland [Para Athletics Grand] in May.
“These races help see where I’m at and I’ll be a bit more dialled in for Switzerland.”
