MP Dwayne Robinson On Road Safety
“We must do all we can to address road safety in Bermuda, as it has become a national emergency,” Shadow Minister of Tourism, Culture and Transport Dwayne Robinson said.
Mr Robinson said, “It’s only mid-February and already Bermuda has suffered three road fatalities this year. Sadly, that’s three families who are grieving, and their lives will be forever altered. To them, I extend my deepest condolences.
“While I acknowledge the Minister’s commitment to updating our National Road Safety Strategy in April 2026, following questions I raised in the House of Assembly, good riding habits cannot be fostered by legislation alone. We must do all we can to address road safety in Bermuda, as it has become a national emergency.
“Government can take meaningful action by introducing stiffer penalties for driving under the influence, improving the condition of our roads, working collaboratively with the police to strengthen enforcement of existing laws, expanding road safety education opportunities within the community, and tackle the growing challenges of substance abuse and mental health.
“Government can also start with practical, everyday improvements. My constituents frequently raise concerns about overgrown foliage, dangerous potholes, inadequate road lighting, and the need for pedestrian crosswalk lights in unsafe locations.
“Several issues I have remedied within my constituency, but others require collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Environment.”
