PLP Statement On Opposition Leadership Change
The PLP issued a statement following the change in Opposition Leader, stating that Mr. Smith has “been chosen by his colleagues as the 8th Opposition Leader in 9 years.”
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party acknowledges the change in Opposition Leadership following a reported vote of No Confidence by OBA MPs and the subsequent action taken to remove Mr. Robert King.
“With over 100 days passed since his appointment, Mr. King’s “100-day plan” has crashed and burned at the hands of his own colleagues.
“Mr. Smith, despite having had to backpedal away from past inappropriate remarks directed towards people of Jamaican descent, has been chosen by his colleagues as the 8th Opposition Leader in 9 years.
“Bermudians benefit when there is an Opposition that is constructive, credible, and stable. Their perpetual upheaval has clearly been a debilitating distraction from not only addressing the issues that matter most to Bermudians, but also on their important constitutional role as Opposition.
“The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party in contrast remains focused on working to provide cost of living relief, invest in our people, expand access to affordable housing and expand access to affordable healthcare. That work continues regardless of political drama elsewhere.”
