Bermuda College employees helped to mark World Book Day by visiting preschool children to donate books and read stories – supporting early literacy and reading for pleasure.

A spokesperson said, “During the visit, each child received a book to take home, and three Bermuda-themed titles were also presented to the preschool’s library to help expand its collection and encourage regular story time.

“One of the titles was by Bermuda College alumna Jasmine Hendrickson, ‘Let’s Go to the Aquarium, A Pop-up Adventure’.

“The College team also spent time reading with students, creating a shared storytelling moment, reinforcing the idea that books can be both enjoyable and empowering from an early age.

“The visit took place at St. Paul’s Preschool which was selected because it is a Government preschool in the same parish as the College, and the initiative was designed as a practical, community-focused contribution.

“The activity also built on Bermuda College President Dr. David Sam’s recent PTA conversations, ‘From ABCs to a Degree: Let’s Start the College Talk,’ which encouraged families to think about education pathways early.

“The talk, which he shared during visits to schools across Bermuda, carried the message: ‘College planning doesn’t start in senior school, it starts now, with small habits at home that build confidence, curiosity, and strong learning skills, keeping every future option open’.”

Assistant to the President for Strategic and Special Projects at Bermuda College, Necheeka Trott said, “Supporting young learners is part of being a good neighbour, By putting books directly into children’s hands and adding to the school’s library, we aimed to encourage early literacy and show families that Bermuda College is part of their village.”

She added, “Reading opens doors, and we want children to feel that from the very beginning.”

The spokesperson said, “It is the first time Bermuda College has taken part in World Book Day, and it plans to take part annually, potentially supporting a different school each year.

“World Book Day is an annual celebration of reading, stories and books, created to encourage children to read for pleasure and to help establish reading as a fun, everyday habit.”
