The island’s top drivers will look to shine under the lights at Southside Motorsports Raceway in St David’s at the “Showdown At Sundown” this weekend.

The event, the first of its kind in Bermuda, will feature more than 60 local and international drivers competing across seven classes tomorrow [March 27] and Saturday.

Racing is scheduled to start at 6pm and finish at 10.30pm on both days, with two races in each class on both days.

The classes are L0206, L0206 Masters, KZ Shifter, KZ Masters, Cadet, Tag Senior and Tag Junior.

Chris Smith, president of the Bermuda Karting Association, said the concept had generated excitement among competitors and organisers.

“We wanted to do something different and came up with the idea of a night race,” Smith told Bernews.

“It’s gathered momentum and everyone seems excited about it.

“We’ve had great support from sponsors and a number of lights donated, which we’re very thankful for. There have been a lot of pieces to put together, but we’re ready to go.”

Among the leading local drivers competing are Scott Barnes, who will race in five classes, Jason North in the L0206 and L0206 Masters, Brian Bulhoes in the L0206, Brandon Frank in the KZ Shifter and Rachel Smith in the L0206.

The event will also feature international competitors, including Camryn Reed, of Louisiana, who will race in the L0206. She became the first woman to win at Daytona Kart Week in 2021.

Zach Linsell, of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, a multiple World Karting Association national champion, will compete in the L0206 class.

“We have a ton of karts signed up and a few international drivers – we have 22 drivers in the L0206 class, which will be hair-raising!” Smith added.
