Person Interfered In Feral Chicken Control

March 26, 2026 | 30 Comments

The Government of Bermuda said they wish to “inform the public of a recent incident in which a member of the public directly interfered with a public officer carrying out official duties related to the management and control of feral chickens.”

A Government spokesperson said, “As part of established animal control procedures, feral chickens are sedated, collected, humanely culled, and prepared for disposal at the Tynes Bay Incinerator.

“These measures are essential to reducing the significant environmental, public health, and agricultural impacts caused by unmanaged feral chicken populations across the Island.

“Interference with these operations poses serious risks to both public officers and the animals involved. When members of the public attempt to intervene – particularly by trying to retrieve sedated chickens with the intention of reviving them – public officers are forced to alter standard protocols to prevent the unauthorised removal of sedated animals.

“This not only disrupts established animal welfare procedures but may also compromise the safety and effectiveness of the culling programme.

“The Government reminds the public that obstructing an officer in the execution of official duties is an offence. We ask all residents to respect the work being undertaken to manage feral chicken populations in a safe, humane, and responsible manner.

“The Department will continue to monitor feral chicken activity and carry out control measures as necessary. Members of the public are urged to report concerns through the normal channels and to avoid direct involvement in wildlife management operations.

“Also, please note that feral chicken removal can be easily reported at: https://www.gov.bm/feralchickens , and the dashboard of progress can also be found on this same webpage. The latest data shows that in the past 30 days, 1,567 feral chickens have been removed.”

The only interference the guy should have gotten would be a big thank you handshake and a case of his favorite beer !

    • Lorraine says:

Agree save the chickens put up netting fence. Leave animals alone go after two legged species.

      • Toodle-oo says:

You obviously misunderstood me . I wasn’t endorsing the person who interfered , I was supporting the (total) elimination of these destructive and noisy pests.
You want to save them ? Then you and your sympathizers go out and build coops for them and keep them on YOUR property !

  2. Carla Simmons says:

Hello wht happen to the Ducks at albuoys point ?

  3. Imagine says:

Horrible life to be born against your will into this world as a mere chicken, to fight for your life growing up as a baby in a harsh world, only to have someone fool you with fake food that drugs you, renders you separated from and incapable of caring for your own babies or family, then to get hauled off to have your neck forcibly wrung broken by someone, or shot. I guess you should all thank God we were not born as chickens, right?

  4. Feathered Friend’s Friend says:

The public saw the video. The supposedly “humane” treatment entailed stuffing live chickens one on top of another in a trash bag!! That was unnecessary cruelty. So we are supposed to believe that this gentleman was then going to cull these chickens in a humane manner IF they survived being suffocated in a trash bag? I call bull! Bravo to the lady who tried to intervene.

    • jon says:

perhaps we should send them a ride share to the slaughter to make you comfortable.

  5. trufth says:

Agree 100%. And before you all disregard me as a “tree hugger,” I’m all for culling, I 100% support it, have at it, cull away, but start with well-deserving humans.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

      “but start with well-deserving humans”

We only have 36 MPs. The “start” will not last long.

  6. Triangle Drifter says:

What is being used to kill feral chickens these days? Thought I heard what sounded like a shotgun in Paget east last week. Last that I saw, quite some time ago they were using an all but useless air rifle to shoot chickens. Even at very short range the thing can’t penetrate the feathers.

Chickens are a nuisance and people feeding them are a big part of the problem.

  7. Kathy says:

If the government is referring to the video that was circulating on Facebook.
I would like to ask them how they can say the chickens were being sedated, collected and then humanely culled?
Picking a chicken up when it is half sedated by its wing and then throwing it into a trash bag on top of no doubt other half sedated chickens is not exactly humane!
I think the Department of Environment and Natural Resources need to rethink. How they collect and deal with these poor Feral chickens!

    • jon says:

its amazing how you all are worried about how a feral chicken is being picked up and removed but ppl are sleeping on the streets in this country and you all go silent.

  8. Baygrapes says:

Theres no sedation involved BTW. Just an idiot running around with his dopey hunting hat, who thinks it’s ok to shoot animals on private property. That’s been my experience with “animal control “.

  9. Racqual T Wainwright says:

I saw around 18 to 20 feral chickens this morning that either party (the lady or the public officer) may want to come and collect from my area. PLEASE COME SOON!

  10. jon says:

until they make their way into your backyard, then its a problem?

    • trufth says:

Look mate, I have feral chickens in my yard. They eat the bugs off my plants. I appreciate them. They don’t mess with garbage bags, they’ve never attacked anyone so what’s the problem? I’d rather have chickens in my yard than feral children.

      • Lee says:

Well ain’t that nice. They dig up my plants with their big feet… crow all day AND night. I’m absolutely sick of them

      • Toodle-oo says:

Ask the farmers how good they are at eating bugs off of plants without eating the entire plant . Thousands of dollars of damage every day !
I think it sounds as though you’ve been lucky so far and no roosters have been to your yard yet .

      • Joe Bloggs says:

“I’d rather have chickens in my yard than feral children.”

I’d rather have feral chickens in my yard than rats. Lucky me, I have both!

      • Jus' Wonderin' says:

That’s all nice and cool for your yard but in everyone else’s yard they are a pest and a nuisance and are actively contributing to certain animal declines in Bermuda. Yes it probably could have been more humane but how do you think you get your pork chops, steaks, eggs, etc. Whole lot worse than that. These feral chickens need to ALL GO one way or another.

  11. Gerald says:

Bie you taught them well bravo, now you need to take em down to kfc. Lol

  12. Local chicken supporter says:

How about we let the chickens continue to roam the land and use then for our own home grown food.

Why should we import chicken to eat laced with chemicals and grown in factories with growth hormones?

    • Toodle-oo says:

Tell you what , you go out and catch one of them and then kill it (your choice of methods) then pluck and clean it inside and out and then cook it and get back to us as to how meaty and good it was compared to a roaster from the grocery store !

      • Joe Bloggs says:

“get back to us as to how meaty and good it was compared to a roaster from the grocery store”

A taste test pitting a feral Bantam hen against a farm-raised roaster?

        Yeah, right.
