Tyler Smith has reflected on his impressive fifth-place finish at the Africa Triathlon Premium Cup in Mossel Bay, South Africa.

Smith completed the standard-distance race last weekend in 1hr 51min 28sec, climbing through the field with the second-fastest 10km run of the day [32:31].

He exited the 1.5km swim in ninth place in 19:26 and maintained his position with a 40km bike split of 58:54 before his strong run secured a top-five finish.

“Strong start to the year in South Africa!” the Olympian wrote on social media.

“How I’ve missed this beautiful country, and racing Olympic distance. One of my favourite courses I’ve ever raced hands down.

“Of course there’s always small things that make it feel like the podium was within reach, but on the whole I don’t take for granted the 90 per cent of what I was able to execute well and find myself so appreciative of the efforts and support of my ‘team’ to get me where I’m at right now.

“A few easy days back in Girona and then taking the lessons here to build for more in 2026.”
