Focus Counselling Donates Bermuda Kites
[Written by Patrick Bean]
P1 students at Somerset Primary, West End Primary and East End Primary were all smiles when Focus Counselling Services presented each youngster with a traditional Bermuda kite.
The giveaway was the brainchild of master kite-maker Gary Wellman, who designed most of the kites and, with Ronald Burrows’ help, constructed them.
Production began in February, and over the next few weeks, Wellman crafted more than 60 flying instruments in his free time at the sober living facility in St George’s.
Focus’s Executive Director, Leslie Grant, who attended both Somerset Primary and West End Primary during his formative years, expressed his gratitude after making the presentations.
“This is the second time Focus Counselling clients have chosen West End Primary and Somerset Primary, mainly because both are my alma mater,” explained Grant. “We chose East End Primary because it is our neighbour.
“We’re hoping to make this an annual event and be ongoing for as long as we can, so that: one, we can keep the tradition of the Bermuda kite going and, hopefully, at some point, we or others can support in teaching how to make these kites.”
