Bermuda Named Fish Dwells In Sea Cucumbers

A fish named after Bermuda has one of the more unusual housing arrangements in the marine world: it lives inside sea cucumbers.

The Atlantic pearlfish, scientifically known as Carapus bermudensis, is listed by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute as living in the body cavities of holothurians, the marine animals more commonly known as sea cucumbers. The species has a reported range from Bermuda to Brazil.

FishBase states that the species occurs in or near shallow seagrass beds, spends the daytime inside sea cucumbers and leaves its host at night.
