OBA’s Campbell On ‘Deteriorating’ Infrastructure

“The One Bermuda Alliance is increasingly concerned by the deteriorating state of Bermuda’s critical infrastructure and the Government’s failure to address these issues with the urgency and coordination they demand,” OBA MP Vance Campbell said.

Mr Campbell — the Shadow Minister Public Works & Infrastructure — said, “Across the island, residents continue to endure unsafe, uneven, and visibly degraded roads, despite repeated promises of sustained improvement. While a repaving programme is underway, the reality is that many of Bermuda’s roads have fallen into what has been acknowledged as a serious state of disrepair, reflecting years of inadequate planning and delayed maintenance.

“Equally troubling is the condition of Bermuda’s water and wastewater systems. Aging infrastructure, including reservoirs dating back to the 1950s, has resulted in leaks, reduced capacity, and interruptions to water supply. System failures have forced the Government to implement temporary workarounds, leaving residents and businesses vulnerable while long-promised long-term solutions remain incomplete. At the same time, outdated wastewater treatment practices continue to pose environmental and public health risks, with insufficient progress made on comprehensive modernization.

“The situation at the Tynes Bay waste facility further underscores the risks of delay. With refurbishment projects facing ongoing setbacks, Bermuda remains dangerously reliant on a single, aging plant, increasing the risk of a serious failure that could disrupt waste disposal across the island.

“The above are only a few examples of how, for years, the PLP Government has failed to execute the most basic infrastructure maintenance. These failures are not without consequence. Delays are driving up long-term costs, increasing the burden on taxpayers, undermining economic competitiveness, and raising the cost of living for Bermudian families. Each year of inaction compounds the scale, complexity and expense of necessary repairs and capital expenditure.

“The One Bermuda Alliance calls on the Government to move beyond piecemeal fixes and deliver a credible, transparent, and time-bound infrastructure strategy that restores confidence and safeguards Bermuda’s future.”
