Somerset Wins 2026 Cup Match Classic

[Updated] Somerset have retained the Cup Match trophy after defeating St George’s by an innings and 87 runs at Somerset Cricket Club.

Somerset resumed day two on 277 for seven and lost their eighth wicket almost immediately when Dion Stovell was caught by Nzari Paynter off the bowling of Keegan Jones for 52.

Stovell, playing in his final Cup Match, received a warm ovation from the crowd as he left the field, with St George’s players shaking his hands as he returned to the pavilion.

Jermal Procter then entertained the crowd with a brisk 41 before he was caught by Jonté Smith off the bowling of Zeko Burgess.

Fellow veteran Malachi Jones, also making his final Cup Match appearance, struck 79 from 63 balls, bringing up his half-century from 38 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes.

Jones was left unbeaten on 79 after Kwasi James was dismissed for nought, caught by wicketkeeper Sinclair Smith off the bowling of slow left-arm spinner Kevon Fubler as Somerset were bowled out for 391.

In reply, St George’s slumped to 90 for eight at lunch in after spinners Derrick Brangman [four for 22] and Dion Stovell [four for 31] shared the wickets.

Brangman struck early, removing Nzari Paynter for four, caught by Terryn Fray, with St George’s on 37 for one.

Delray Rawlins, who had been dropped on nought by Brangman off Tre Manders, became Brangman’s second victim, caught by Zerai Tomlinson for 20.

Brangman claimed a third wicket when Onias Bascome edged to Kamau Leverock, who took a superb catch at slip, for a duck, reducing St George’s to 75 for three.

Stovell then sparked a collapse, dismissing Jonté Smith for 41 after he was caught by Dominic Sabir, before removing Isaiah O’Brien for nought, caught and bowled, and trapping Sinclair Smith lbw without scoring.

Stovell claimed his fourth wicket when Macai Simmons was trapped leg before for eight, leaving St George’s on 90 for seven.

Brangman struck again with the final ball before lunch, bowling Keegan Jones for six to leave St George’s reeling at 90 for eight.

Sabir wrapped up the innings after the interval, dismissing Luke Horan for ten, caught by Stovell, before Zeko Burgess became the last man out for eight, caught by Stovell at slip. St George’s were bowled out for 113.

Forced to follow on after conceding a 278-run first-innings deficit, St George’s lost an early wicket when Onias Bascome was caught by substitute Jan-Johan Nel off the bowling of seamer Jermal Proctor for 12.

Isaiah O’Brien led the response, bringing up his half-century from 48 balls, including five fours and two sixes, as St George’s reached 93 for one.

O’Brien’s impressive innings came to an when he was bowled by Kamau Leverock for 64, leaving St George’s on 111 for two.

Opener Nzari Paynter was trapped lbw by spinner Dion Stovell for 35 as St George’s slipped to 115 for three before their batting unravelled in dramatic fashion.

Stovell struck again with the very next delivery, removing Delray Rawlins first ball after he was caught by Jaiden Manders to leave the spinner on a hat-trick.

The collapse continued as Macai Simmons was caught by Dominic Sabir off Derrick Brangman for two, reducing St George’s to 118 for five. Luke Horan followed soon after, making one before he was caught by Manders off Stovell to leave the challengers 119 for six.

Brangman tightened his grip on the innings by trapping Sinclair Smith lbw for one, with St George’s slipping to 127 for seven. Kevon Fubler then departed without scoring, also lbw to Brangman, as the score became 129 for eight and Somerset closed in on victory.

Keegan Jones was bowled by Malachi Jones for eight, leaving St George’s one wicket from defeat before Brangman completed the rout by bowling Zeko Burgess for 21 to finish with figures of four for 50 and seal Somerset’s Cup Match triumph.
