Google Plans Third Subsea Bermuda Cable Link
Google announced plans for a third subsea cable connection involving Bermuda, with the new Canoa system set to link the island directly with the Dominican Republic.
Google’s announcement said, “Canoa is a new subsea cable system connecting the Dominican Republic to Bermuda. Canoa comes from the Taíno word for canoe, harkening to the longstanding maritime culture in the Caribbean and North Atlantic. When combined with the Nuvem and Sol cable systems, the Canoa cable will enable a highly reliable and resilient connection from Latin America and the Caribbean directly to Europe and North America.
“The Canoa subsea cable from the Dominican Republic to Bermuda will interlink with the Nuvem and Sol cables, while cable rings to both the United States and Europe provide connectivity to the Google Cloud regions on the U.S. East Coast [South Carolina and Virginia] and Europe [Madrid].
“With these new investments, Google continues to pave the way for a more connected and open global cloud network centered on increasing reach, reliability, and resilience for all. ”

A Bermuda Government spokesperson said, “As global connectivity and robust infrastructure remains important in rapidly growing technology-driven environment, yesterday [Aug. 10], Google announced Canoa, the first subsea cable system to connect Bermuda directly to the Dominican Republic.
“The announcement follows two recent developments in June 2026, including the landings of the Nuvem and Sol cable systems, and the expansion of the Bermuda Digital Exchange Port which was announced in the same month.
“Canoa takes its name from the Taíno word for canoe, and within a single year, Bermuda has recorded two cable landings and secured a third system, each of which extends the routes running through this island.”
Minister of Home Affairs Alexa Lightbourne said, “Canoa is the first subsea cable system to connect Bermuda directly to the Dominican Republic, and it follows the Nuvem and Sol landings and the expansion of the Bermuda Digital Exchange Port announced in June 2026. The name carries a maritime history that moved people and goods across these waters long before any cable did.
“This connection opens new digital pathways and partnerships between Bermuda, the Dominican Republic and the wider Caribbean Community, strengthens resilience for Bermudian households and businesses, and widens the market they can reach. Global infrastructure builders are choosing Bermuda repeatedly, and that confidence places our island on the world stage as a trusted landing point.”
The spokesperson said, “Canoa opens a southbound corridor that Bermuda has not held before. Every existing route runs north or east. This system creates a direct digital pathway between Bermuda and the Caribbean, and it gives commercial and institutional partnerships in the region a physical foundation.
“Bermuda’s relationship with Google has showcased to the world the possibilities when combining its strategic geographic location with its robust regulatory environment that is responsive to emerging technologies and along with a global infrastructure investment.”
“Our task now is to ensure that infrastructure translates into opportunity. We want these investments to contribute to greater economic resilience, new areas of business, opportunities for our people and a Bermuda that is prepared to compete in an increasingly digital global economy.”
The spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Home Affairs holds the telecommunications portfolio and will work with the Regulatory Authority on the licensing and landing approvals the system requires.”

If you all sit there with shut mouths, you may see giant ships damaging things unseen to our eyes that could have life-altering repercussions for our island home.
