35 Traffic Tickets Issued By 1.00pm Today

Police issued 35 traffic tickets by approximately 1:00pm today, with the majority for speeding offences, including an individual who was clocked doing 87kph on Harbour Road.

In an update provided at around 1:00pm today, the police said, “The Bermuda Police Service once again urges motorists to be mindful of their speed and to ensure their vehicle’s documents are up to date.

“35 tickets have so far been issued today with the majority being for speeding offences. In fact, high speeds of 87kph and 83kph have been recorded Harbour Road and South Road, respectively. Yes, you read that right. 87kph on Harbour Road. We continue to encounter and ticket individuals operating unlicensed and uninsured vehicles.”

This update comes as there has been a spate of collisions –  including three fatal collisions in the last few weeks — with the government convening an urgent meeting with various stakeholders and saying it requires a “whole-of-Government response and a whole-of-Bermuda response.”

Speaking at the press conference earlier today, Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons said, “The Police Service has already increased traffic-enforcement visibility, with particular focus on speeding and other dangerous driving behaviour. During yesterday’s targeted operation, officers issued more than 60 tickets, the majority for speeding.

“From Friday, BPS will strengthen this response further through dedicated, traffic enforcement operations during the County Games and Labour Day period. Additional officers will be deployed on overtime to support this work. The public will see enhanced traffic enforcement. Our deployments will be guided by collision information and public complaints so that we can focus our activity where the risk is greatest.

“We will target the behaviours most likely to lead to death and serious injury:

• Speeding.
• Impaired driving.
• Dangerous and careless driving.
• Cellphone use.
• Unsafe overtaking.
• Failure to wear seatbelts and protective helmets.
• Unlicensed, uninsured and unroadworthy vehicles.
• Driving while disqualified and other serious moving violations.

“Roadside sobriety operations will take place through the end of this month. Their timing and duration will be informed by risk, upcoming social events and operational assessment,” the Commissioner added.
