Bermuda Is Love has launched its first two-week paid internship programme, giving two students hands-on experience in advocacy and community issues affecting Bermuda.
Joanna Anderson and Amira Gift explored issues including food sovereignty, housing, justice and healthcare through meetings with community leaders, government officials and legal professionals.
Adam Crichlow, founder of Bermuda Is Love, told Bernews: “Joanna and Amira had two weeks of a paid internship to participate with everything Bermuda Is Love does.
“They got to talk about what food sovereignty means, look at our community farm, our community garden, they got to learn about housing insecurity.
“They got to talk with different lawyers about the justice system and health system – all the basic needs we advocate for – from food, housing and education, healthcare, justice, environment and clothing.
“Joanna and Amira were both very enthusiastic and engaged in the programme, wanting to learn and ask questions about the problems Bermuda faces and how they can contribute as young persons.”
Ms Gift, 16, said: “When the internship came up, I thought it would be a nice way to learn about some of the issues they deal with.
“I got to meet a lot of new people, make a lot of new connections and learn some new information.”
Ms Anderson, 16, said: “I was interested in learning about advocacy justice and campaigning,
“I gained new perspectives, knowledge and a new way of thinking.”
