Video: Tennessee Basketball Interview With Scott
Bermudian basketball player Ralph Scott spoke about Bermuda, his move into NCAA Division I basketball and his early experiences with the Tennessee Volunteers during a University of Tennessee Media Timeout interview.
Speaking with host Sarah Detwiler, the 6-foot-8 player described Bermuda as a small, close-knit community.
“I mean, it’s definitely really small,” Scott said. “It’s probably the most noticeable thing.”
Scott grew up playing soccer and also participated in track and swimming before focusing on basketball. He said his height helped steer him toward the sport.
Asked what it meant to become the first men’s basketball player from Bermuda to reach the NCAA Division I level, Scott said, “It means a lot. I mean, it’s really cool being the first to do anything, so definitely excited for the opportunity, grateful.”
Describing his style of play, Scott said, “I’d say I’m like a Swiss Army knife,” explaining that he is prepared to shoot, rebound, defend and perform whatever role the team requires.
Scott said the Volunteers’ new players have been coming together and that he has enjoyed meeting his teammates. He also credited head coach Rick Barnes and the surroundings in Knoxville with helping him settle into the programme.
“Coach Barnes, for sure,” Scott said. “You know, just a fun guy. He wants the best out of everyone, and then just the environment.
“Knoxville kind of reminded me of Bermuda, all the greenery and everything. So it felt like home.”
Away from basketball, Scott said he enjoys fishing and listening to reggae music. He recommended Chronixx and Buju Banton to those unfamiliar with the genre and named his mother’s lasagna as the home-cooked meal he misses most.
