Mexico Win Davis Cup Tennis Event
Davis Cup tennis returned to Bermuda for the first time in three decades this weekend, with Mexico winning the event, which was held at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium.
Bermuda entered the World Group II competition following their 3-2 victory over Georgia earlier this year, with Daniel Phillips, Trey Mallory, Tariq Simons, Wayne Montgomery and Zach McGuire selected to represent the island under captain Richard “Ricky” Mallory.
Mexico entered Sunday holding a 2-0 advantage following victories in Saturday’s two singles matches. The visitors secured the tie in the doubles, with Alan Magadán and Luis Carlos Álvarez defeating Phillips and Mallory 6-2, 6-0 to give Mexico an unassailable 3-0 advantage.
The Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association said, “Mexico takes the tie 3–0, bringing Bermuda’s Davis Cup World Group II Tie weekend to a close. Thank you to our players, coaches, volunteers, sponsors and everyone who came out to support Team Bermuda. The home crowd showed up, and the support was felt every step of the way. Proud of the team.
