Sail Away Soca Supports Helping Hands
On September 26, Sail Away Soca boarded theUberVida for its annual fundraiser supporting The Stephen Lee Helping Hands Foundation, bringing together soca, community, positivity, and purpose.
Having recently received official charity status, Helping Hands is entering a new stage of growth, with an increased focus on developing corporate and community partnerships. However, as the organisation grows, it remains committed to its grassroots beginnings.
“We are excited about growing our corporate partnerships, but we also love going back to our roots through our soca events,” said Helping Hands founder Hafid James. “There is something special about bringing people together through music, positivity, joy, and freedom while raising funds for Bermuda’s children.”
At the heart of The Stephen Lee Helping Hands Foundation is a focus on pattern disruption.
Many challenges experienced in adulthood can be connected to habits developed much earlier in life. Adults often struggle to achieve and sustain health and fitness goals, while lifestyle-related conditions such as obesity and hypertension continue to affect communities.
Helping Hands believes that developing healthier habits during childhood can help change that trajectory and give young people a stronger foundation for adulthood.
Through its Healthy Meals Program and Literacy Through Athletics Program, the charity aims to disrupt unhealthy patterns early by combining access to nutritious food with health education, physical activity, academic development and mentorship.
“Our goal is not simply to address a problem once it appears,” James said. “We want to get further upstream. If we can help children develop healthier habits, understand nutrition, value physical activity and strengthen themselves academically, we have an opportunity to give Bermuda’s next generation a brighter, healthier future.”
Helping Hands is continuing to seek corporate sponsors interested in supporting its programmes directly, as well as businesses interested in sponsoring future Sail Away Soca fundraising events, with all proceeds supporting the charity’s initiatives. People can also donate directly or support the cause by joining the next Sail Away Soca event.
“At Burrows Lightbourn, we are proud to support organizations like The Stephen Lee Helping Hands Foundation that invest in the future of Bermuda’s young people. Sail Away Soca demonstrates how community, culture, and entertainment can come together to create a meaningful impact. We are pleased to partner with Helping Hands in their mission to promote healthier lifestyles, positive development, and greater opportunities for Bermuda’s youth,” said Ibou Barry, Bacardi Brand Manager, Burrows Lightbourn Ltd.
Helping Hands also thanked the partners and sponsors who have supported its journey.
“We would not have been able to start this without the people and organisations who believed in what we were trying to build,” James said. “A huge thank you to Bermuda’s Best, Rusty G, for always bringing the vibes; Jumuiya Ya Afrika for continually assisting with our events; Sound Concepts for their continued support; and our drink sponsor, Burrows Ltd, for helping us add even more value to the experience for our guests.”
For Helping Hands, Sail Away Soca shows that fundraising can bring people together, celebrate community and create lasting impact—all while having a great time.
