Video: Bermuda Murals Inspire Documentary
Following the international success of Transforming the Beautiful Game: The Clyde Best Story, filmmaker Dan Egan turns his lens toward another form of storytelling in the new short documentary Walls of Inspiration: Where Cultural Memory Becomes Living Legacy.
The film, which begins its film festival journey this fall, explores how murals and public art preserve the people, stories, and achievements that shape communities and carry their history forward.
Walls of Inspiration grew out of footage, stories, and discoveries made during the production and international tour of Transforming the Beautiful Game.
As Clyde Best’s story travelled from Bermuda and London to communities across North America, Egan became increasingly interested in the murals encountered along the way and the role they play as living records of history.
“What struck me was that these murals weren’t simply paintings,” said Mr Egan.
“They were communities making a decision about who and what should be remembered.
“The walls become part of the story, allowing that history to pass from one generation to the next.”
Filmed in Bermuda and Portland, Oregon, Walls of Inspiration goes behind the artwork to explore the artists, subjects, and communities that give these public spaces meaning.
Among the works featured is Bermuda’s Jamaican Grill mural, honouring five of the island’s football legends: Clyde Best, David Bascome, Shaun Goater, Nahki Wells, and Kyle Lightbourne.
At the heart of the film is Bermudian artist and educator Barbara Dillas, a former Sandys Secondary Middle School art teacher who spent more than 29 years inspiring young artists.
Coming from a family of artists, Ms Dillas has created murals throughout Bermuda, while her work has been exhibited at the Bermuda Society of Arts and across the Caribbean and North America.
Dillas and her artwork were also featured in Transforming the Beautiful Game.
Through Ms Dillas and other muralists, Walls of Inspiration explores how public art becomes more than paint on a wall—it becomes a living record of history, identity, and community.
The short documentary is also part of More Than A Game — From Bermuda’s Fields To The World, curated by Bermudian artist and curator Jasmine Lee and housed at the Diamonds International Building in Dockyard, just behind Bermuda’s historic Clocktower.
Through photography, archival material, memorabilia, art, and film, the exhibition celebrates Bermuda’s extraordinary football heritage and preserves its stories for future generations.
Walls of Inspiration arrives as Transforming the Beautiful Game: The Clyde Best Story continues to gain recognition on the international festival circuit.
The film was named Audience Favourite at the 2026 Roxbury International Film Festival [RoxFilm] and recently won Best International Film at the 2026 BronzeLens Film Festival in Atlanta.
The momentum continues in October when Transforming the Beautiful Game returns home for a Bermuda Encore Tour, bringing the film back to communities across the island through public, community, and educational screenings.
The Encore Tour runs from October 6–10, with one show at BUEI on October 6, two shows at Bermuda College on October 7 and 8, two shows at Grotto Bay Beach Resort & Spa on October 9, and four shows at the Media Lounge at Dockyard on October 10.
In association with CURB, the week will also include a series of school and community engagements designed to bring Clyde Best’s story and its themes of perseverance, opportunity, race, sport, and social change to a new generation of Bermudians.
With Walls of Inspiration, Mr Egan expands that conversation about legacy beyond the individuals portrayed on the walls to the artists and communities responsible for ensuring their stories endure.
Together, the two films explore how the achievements and stories of one generation can be preserved, celebrated, and passed forward to the next.
